Duress Alarms

Duress alarms

Duress alarm quotes can describe quite different systems under the same name. Asking every installer the same questions shows what each one is offering.

01What kind of button are you quoting: fixed under a desk, worn, or carried?Ask how many buttons the price covers and where each one would go.
02When a button is pressed, who receives the alert?A monitoring centre, a phone, a staff member on site, or a mix. Write down each one.
03Is the alarm silent, or does it sound on site?Ask whether that can be changed later.
04Does it connect to an alarm system I already have?If so, ask which brand and model they would be working with.
05Is monitoring included, and what does it cost each month? And how long any contract runs, and what it costs to leave early.
06How is the system tested once it is in?Ask who does the testing, how often, and whether it is in the price.
07What happens if the power or internet goes down?Listen for whether the alert still gets through, and how.
08Is this the full price?Equipment, installation, setup and the first month, all in one figure.
Ask each business the same questions and write the answers side by side. Printed, the sheet fills one page, with a column for each of three quotes. From duressalarms.com.au, a concept page.

What changes the price

The number of buttons, whether they are fixed or worn, and whether someone watches for the alert around the clock are the main things a quote assumes. Two prices only compare once those answers sit in the same row.

A low price for the equipment can come with a long monitoring contract. Ask for both figures and add them up over the time you expect to keep the system.

Before anyone comes to quote

Walk through the space and note where people work alone or meet the public, so each installer is quoting for the same places.

Decide who should hear about an alert after hours, and have their names ready. The installer will ask, and the answer shapes the system.

Where to check

  • ABN Lookup, Australian Business Register

Shows whether a business's ABN is active or cancelled, its business type and its GST status, and the Register says the public can use it to check a business before buying.
